Spelling program
Hello!
I am following a new program in my classroom. It is adapted directly from Dr Lee Jenkins L to J program. What we are trying to eliminate is the “Permission to Forget”. As he outlines, we often expect students to retain information during a short-term period. This is problematic because students often encounter problems when we make long-term retention assessments.
Last week I sent home a vocabulary list for our new FLA unit on the Arctic and Nunavut. This list is comprehensive and contains all the words that students are expected to master during the entire unit. I am using this website to randomize all they spelling words of our vocabulary list for all our dictées during this unit. Students will never know exactly which words they are expected to prepare for any given dictée as they will be randomized. They should concentrate their efforts on mastering all words over a long-term period. After this unit students will receive another comprehensive list for the following FLA unit that will contain 15% of the previous list. This will continue all year-long. I do realize that this program has high expectations for our students. We are strategically targeting long-term retention for our students to ensure continued success in their writing. This program also has a student support to encourage them along their way to mastery success. Students individually and as a class will plot the data results from their dictées. I personally like this element of the program that allows students to practice data plotting and charting information.
I am also creating an account on this website for our families. There is a search function on the page. If you enter ‘’skroom10” into the search field and hit enter, you will find our account. This page will allow students to practice the English equivalences for our spelling words and their definitions in English. Unfortunately, this site does not allow students to practice the actual spelling of the words. Try it out with your child and please offer feedback. It seems to me that this is a great resource to help us with our new program.
Should you have any additional questions regarding this program, please send me an email.
